As an orthopaedic surgeon and constituent, I regularly see patients suffering from debilitating musculoskeletal conditions.  While many of those suffering from musculoskeletal diseases and conditions have access to good care, there are too many who go untreated and needlessly suffer.  I strongly urge you to cosponsor H.R. 1021 - the Access to America’s Orthopaedic Services (AAOS) Act of 2009.

H.R. 1021 will improve the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and conditions in the United States. In addition, the bill addresses the fundamental need to educate the Congress and the public on the burden of musculoskeletal diseases and conditions and aims to identify and analyze health care disparities within the orthopaedic specialty, particularly among communities of color.

One in four individuals in the United States suffers from a musculoskeletal disorder or condition that requires medical attention.  Musculoskeletal diseases and conditions are the single greatest cause for total work lost and hospital stays, with the direct and indirect costs associated with these conditions totaling more than $849 billion each year.

We urge you to cosponsor of this vital legislation to ensure access to quality orthopaedic care.
