Legislation Proposes Occupational Therapists Eligible for Loan Forgiveness as Frontline Providers
Occupational Therapy Named a Frontline Health Profession
Legislation to establish a Frontline Providers Loan Repayment Program was introduced Tuesday by Representatives Bruce Braley (D-IA) and Zack Space (D-OH). The Access to Frontline Health Care Act of 2009 (HR 2891) would make occupational therapists who practice in underserved areas eligible for loan forgiveness in a manner similar to the National Health Services Corps.
The bill would extend loan repayment to occupational therapists and other Frontline Health Care Providers in exchange for working for two years in medically underserved areas. Such areas are designated by the Secretary of Health and Human Services or by the State.
In addition to occupational therapy, the following professions qualify as frontline service providers: physical therapy, audiology, speech language pathology, general surgery, chiropractic, optometry, ophthalmology, pharmacy, public health, podiatric medicine, dietetics, general pediatrics, respiratory therapy, medical technology, and radiologic technology.
AOTA enthusiastically supports this legislation and acknowledges the leadership of Representatives Braley and Space in introducing the bill and recognizing the importance and value of occupational therapy.
